Davide Squillace

Davide is not available for comment. He’s got to catch a flight; he’s rushing to the studio; the stage manager is frantically hurrying him into the booth; he’s meeting to discuss plans for his labels…or any of the other myriad reasons why Davide feels like he hasn’t slept, eaten or stopped running for what seems like his whole life.

Born in Siena, raised in Naples, it took a trip to London for Davide to finally discover electronic music. Wooed by the mood and sound of the British scene, he returned to Naples flush with energy, excitement and a knowing that this new calling would consume him.

Davide immersed himself in this world in every conceivable way. In 1999 he began studying at the Naples’ school of sound engineering, tinkering with his first productions, promoting techno events, and finally performing. His first releases on Primate Records, Design Music and Conform were a cadence of his arrival and showcased the young artist’s steadfast style.

Having honed his craft at home, in 2004 Davide left Naples for Barcelona unwavering in his resolve. Now, while touring around the continent, he began to release in earnest what would become a massive body of work, and at a dizzying pace. His productions have graced the catalogs of some of the finest labels including Ovum, Sci+Tec, Morris Audio, Resopal Schallware, Supernature, CMYK, Adagio, Viva, Nervous, Saved, Shake, Rillis; the list goes on… Which is not even to speak of his curating and releasing on his own labels – Sketch, Minisketch, Vir, 500, Titbit and most recently the bold Hideout Records.

In addition to his genre-defining works, Davide continues to inspire and ignite dancefloors worldwide. Whether it be at Circoloco, where he has been a resident since 2007, Womb, Berghain, D.Edge, or any other marquee venue, Davide plays with an unequalled funk and excitement. His signature sets, revered by the masses and peers alike, do a double duty in guarding our much-loved traditions while constantly pushing them forward.

The realm of possibilities for one of electronic music’s leading lights is endless. Unfortunately, the minutes in the day are not. Davide’s answer is simple – do what you love and make no compromises.

Beatportal: Bomb Alert!!!!!

By Matteo on August 12, 2011 | Category: Davide's blog, Luca's blog, News | Tags: , , , , |

Hideout, the label run by Luca Bacchetti and Davide Squillace, finally drops a tune that’s been the talk of Ibiza this summer: “That Ginger Ponytail,” a collaboration between Squillace and Argentina’s Guti. Bright vibraphones and shimmying shakers give the track a refreshing, easygoing touch, reflecting the way the tune came together.

The session was done “at night,” says Squillace, “with lots of drinks and cigarettes in a very relaxed environment. I would work on some bits, and Guti played keys—apparently it worked out.”

Apparently! Rounding out the release come remixes from Dubfire and Kerri Chandler. “We have been close friends with Ali for the last four years, and I thought he would enjoy working on the remix of this track,” says Squillace. “As for Kerri, he started playing for Circoloco this year and we got closer as friends, and music-wise. I thought this track would definitely fit his style, and they both did an amazing job, as expected.”

For more from Squillace, check out a new interview with him on the Hideout website, and see RA profiles for Squillace and Bacchetti to find out where to catch them behind the decks.

Keep reading to check out the release, plus charts from Squillace and Bacchetti.

Davide Squillace “Reconstructs” Cavo Paradiso – Inteview

By Matteo on August 9, 2011 | Category: Davide's blog, News | Tags: , , , |

There is excitement in the air surrounding the beautiful Mediterranean Island of Mykonos, and especially at Cavo Paradiso headquarters, the legendary Greek club which has just being voted as one of the top ten clubs in the world. Cavo Paradiso is ready for its best season to date and if the club’s compilation is anything to go by, then we are all in for a treat!
Mixed and compiled by Italian DJ & producer, Davide Squillace, the title of this project has been heavily influenced by the major renovation that’s taking place at the club ready for 2011. The Hideout Records boss and Circo Loco resident has come up with a mix that oozes summer appeal, which on hearing it fills you with excitement and expectation for the forthcoming summer season.
A quick look at the track list proves that this sonic journey is full of uncompromising quality and underground ethos in a market saturated and dictated by formulas. Artists such as Osunlade, DOP and Isolee provide an earthy, organic soundtrack which is implemented perfectly by the latest influences from the flourishing house and techno scene, by the likes of Cadenza‘s Reboot & Desolat‘s Guti amongst many others.
And here Davide tells us about the compilation, production and life…

DJD: When did you first play at Cavo Paradiso?

Davide: It was 3 years ago with Ali (Dubfire).

DJD: Why did you decide to do the album?
Davide:
Cause I think it s a solid project from a very respectable club.

DJD: What is special about Cavo Paradiso?
Davide:
A part from the venue it self which is very unique, the crowd comes form all over the world which makes it a special nite.

DJD: What did you try to achieve with the album? Did Cavo Paradiso deserve a specific sound?
Davide:
I tryed to show where are I am right now with my idea of music, but trying to make a mix that can be enjoyed in a club as much as on a sofa.

DJD: The album is called ‘Reconstructions’ which reflects the clubs recent renovation, how does it feel to be part of such an exciting new dawn for the club?

Davide: Very much excited to see the all new thing, can’t complain about the old structure so I’m sure they did something worth experiencing …

DJD: You have quite a few labels under your belt the newest is Hideout which you share with Luca Bacchetti, one of the tracks is featured on the album. What is the ethos behind the label is it a reflection of perhaps your own evolved musical taste and where it is at now?
Davide:
With Hideout we are trying to be genre free, trying not be labeled too much. We’d like to come out of different boxes.

DJD: You used the new Traktor Kontrol S4 platform to mix the CD with, why did you choose to use this and what do you feel it achieves/is different to anything else?
Davide:
I always keep an eye on the new technical gear on the market. After seeing the S4 I was thrilled to used it for a mix, then the Cavo offer come and I said “et voilá ”

DJD:
You also use the iPad when DJing, what is it about the iPad that you like? What does it allow you to do differently? How does it enhance your sets?
Davide:
I’m using the Ipad to control the Ableton, I’m running a program, on which i designed my own layout that sends OSC messages to the main laptop. From the laptop an other program will convert this OSC messages into midi ones that are recognizable from Ableton. It’s fun messing around with your fingers, give to the performance a human feeling.

DJD: What is your favourite studio tool? Why?

Davide: I don’t think I have only one, few machines I really like, Neve, machinedruum, Reaktor, Soundtoys …

DJD: Which piece of kit have you found that you just couldn’t live without when mixing? Why?

Davide: Traktor for the endless control u have over a track

DJD: Do you have any strange habits in the studio?
Davide:
Cigartee + Coffe + Dancing

DJD: You are based in Barcelona, what is it about the city that draws and keeps you there?
Davide:
Is very similar to Napoli, but things work better, easy going life, great food….

DJD: You have been resident at DC10 for Circo Loco for a number of years, this is another outdoor inspired party, do you generally prefer to play these kinds of parties? Why do you prefer this vibe?
Davide:
DC10 is a unique place that can’t be reproduced anywhere… I like outdoor as much as indoor is more about the crowd that drives the party more then the location.

DJD: Have there been any up and coming producers this year that have really caught your attention?
Davide:
Philip Bader, SLZ, Tale of us ..and many more i can’t recall…

DJD: Who do you enjoy to watch DJ when you go out?
Davide:
I prefer Live show, but a lot of friends are very interesting djs to watch spinning.

DJD: Who (bands, DJs etc) inspired you to get into the music?

Davide: Derrick May, Richie Hawtin, System 7…etc

DJD: What do you prefer, being in the studio or DJing?
Davide:
The 2 things can’t live without the other, I won’t be djing without producing or the other way around…You get to understand so much about music on the dancefloor and you understand a lot in the studio, just in a different way .

Davide Squillace & Guti “That Ginger Ponytail” Out August 4th, Hideout Music

By Matteo on July 29, 2011 | Category: Davide's blog, News, Releases | Tags: , , , , , |

Seems not so long ago when Davide Squillace and Luca Bacchetti joined forces to create HIDEOUT.. next thing you know, tenth release is  ready to release, time flies. For this new record , Davide teamed up with his long time friend Guti (Desolat, Supplement Facts, Crosstown rebels)
That Ginger Ponytail starts with with complex latin percussion patterns, followed with a catchy vocal hook and some african style vibes. On the flip side, techno legend Dubfire delivers a crazy dub techno remix while house legend Kerri Chandler used more of the latin feel and added some typical chicago organ. A must have for all deejays !!

Interview, Davide Squillace: I’m a performer

By Danila on July 28, 2011 | Category: Davide's blog, News | Tags: |

Davide Squillace is more of a performer than an artist. Born in Siena, he grew up in
Naples and stared to go to his !rst parties at 15. His friends were DJs and just like that,
he found himself playing behind a DJ booth. At 19, however, he wanted more and new
stimuli in his life, so he decided to move to London. In the UK capital he bought his
!rst equipment and has continued working to where he is today. Since 2004 he lives
in Barcelona, a multicultural city where he has found a perfect base to do what he likes
most, music.

Let’s speak about your roots. “Yes, there really is an Italian sound that even picks up
some regional shades. In Naples, the sound at the beginning of the millennium was
repetitive techno, very different from the clean-cut characteristic sound from Germany. It
had Latin in”uences which made you move more. It was sexy and informal. In the North
of Italy, on the other hand, people like Mauro Picotto produce a sound that’s more for
the dance-”oor, intelligent and destined for peak time.”

“Where am I most at home? DC10. It’s much more than a club to me. It’s my family, my
best friends”. Even the public touches him deeply, “They’re essential to play at ease”. What
about Amnesia? “To play at the opening was special for me. I admire people like Nacho
Capella and Mar-T a lot. They’re professionals who want to reach people’s hearts through
music and playing B2B with Matthias Tanzmann was a very exciting moment for me”. It’s
not the !rst time that Squillace and Tanzmann play together. They really are a perfect team
and those who have experienced their musical journeys, know that they’re unforgettable.

Like most people, it’s hard for him to !nd an answer when it comes to the frequently
asked question regarding his style. “I don’t know. I would like to be clearer about it,
although sincerely I’d prefer that people form their own opinions. I’m afraid of being
classi!ed. I consider myself more of a performer than an artist. I want people to come
and listen to me with an open mind and then decide later, freely and without any labels,
whether they like it or not. One can play underground tracks that become commercial
after playing them a lot, but this doesn’t mean that the work is commercial”. There’s
something to be said about Squillace and his music: he moves through feelings, with
no intention of selling out and this attitude is what has brought him to the top.

Where he gets his inspiration from is no mystery. He is inspired by everyday life, by the
little details in a normal life connected to music: a friendly conversation, playing new
instruments and most of all, playing with sounds. “Suddenly a sound appears that I like
and the rest comes from there. We’re surrounded by sounds at all times. Before we’re
born we listen to the beat of our mother’s heart. It could be that techno artists stayed a
bit longer in the womb to listen to that boom boom boom…”

What about the labels? Davide Squillace used to be ‘the man about the labels’. Now
he only has one, Hideout, which he shares with Luca Bacchetti. “The label was created
with the intention to launch electronic music based on a 4/4 beat. Music made to
dance. The last track we edited was by Patrick Lindsey, a dance-”oor track, and we’re
now working on a track produced by Guti and myself. A sentimental track with a Latin
touch which will include remixes by Dub!re and Kerry Chandler”.

“Apart from my label and although it doesn’t have much to do with my sound, I like
working with Ovum, Desolat and Cadenza.” Favourite artists you would like to mention?
“There are so many good ones that it’ very dif!cult to name only a few but indeed
there’s one that I love: Arto Lindsay, an American producer who lives in Brazil and who
knows how to cross the borders of different musical genres in search of new sounds.”

What are your summer plans? “I am doing a remix for Tiefschwarz but what my body
is really aching for and what inspires me most at this time of year is to get lost in the
clubs, to feel the contact with the crowd, to recharge my batteries and return to the
studio with new ideas and lots of new energy.”

Welcome to Ibiza Davide! You are one of us!
